My Thursday afternoon meeting was a no show. Imagine my surprise when a drenched, flustered brunette slipped into the booth across from me, acting like she was supposed to be there. When she slipped back out with a snappy goodbye, I never thought I’d see her again. Until I walked into my Friday morning meeting. At first, I didn’t recognize her—she was dry this time. But from the look on her face, she recognized me. When she gave the worst pitch I’ve ever sat through, I thought my boss, and mentor, was going to show her the door—except he accepts the proposal and tells me we have to work together. I didn’t anticipate I would like her, let alone be interested in her. Sure, she was hot and sassy. But something about her rubbed me the wrong way. And yet I couldn’t stop thinking about her. So, when she leaves the room and her phone chimes with a new text, I knew I wasn’t supposed to look. I also knew I wasn’t supposed to cancel her date for later that evening. And I definitely knew I wasn’t supposed to delete the entire exchange, so she had no idea what I’d done. But I did. And then I showed up at the restaurant, pretending like this was all a big coincidence. When the date is over, I want more. I need more. We start pretend-dating because she needs practice, and I tell myself, New York’s most eligible billionaire bachelor, that this is just a bit of fun. What could possibly go wrong?
Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward are excited to bring you the Cocky Hero Club: original works from various authors inspired by Keeland and Ward's New York Times bestselling Cocky Bastard series.
*Mister Manhattan is a contemporary enemies to lovers romance inspired by Stuck-Up Suit.
A girl falls for a billionaire.
Jurnee is moving to New York to start a coffee shop and starts to fall for the guy at her new office where she is pitching her coffee shop idea to. At first, Anderson is extremely cocky and seems like an entitled rich man but as the book goes on his layers start to come off and you start to fall for him alongside Jurnee herself. He may be from a rich family and filthy rich himself but he is still easy to swoon over. I only have a couple of things I can think of that I was not on board for or did not like. Other than that, Mister Manhattan was a cute, fast, and enjoyable read.
I did not like the instant attraction that Anderson had for Jurnee. It felt kind of unrealistic. The fact that Anderson never wanted to settle down with anyone for many years and then all of a sudden there was this instant love feeling towards Jurnee... I didn't buy it like I hoped to. For me, to like instant love scenarios in books it has to be written exceptionally well and this one fell kind of flat to me.
Secondly, the book dragged on at times and I was bored.. I think this was slightly due to the reason that I was hoping for a steamy read. I like reading about hot times/sex in books. Let's be honest, most girls or people turn to romance for this specific reason. I needed more steam and this book had like none. When Anderson and Jurnee finally slept together it was just glanced over and talked about. We had no description of the actual event. The build-up was there and then it died and we got no dirty details. I NEEDED SO MUCH MORE THAN "WE MADE LOVE FOR THE FIRST TIME" AS A DESCRIPTION?! These books in the cocky hero's series are supposed to be like Penelope Ward's and Vi Keeland's books and they always have hot sex and Mister Manhattan had none and I mean none. There was so much build-up to the two character's doing it and we only got a sentence about it?!
Also, at first, initially, I was confused at who was who in the book because there were tons of side character's and like a lot. Once I got down who was who then I enjoyed the story much more.
The things that I did like were.....
1. A hot alpha male with a tragic love backstory and reason behind his cockiness.
2. Anderson is the owner of a pet pig. I LOVE PIGS! Any book where one of the main character's is obsessed with animals or has animals is an instant like from me.
3. All of the book and movie references.
4. I loved the side character's the best like Anderson's friends and Jurnee's friends.
5. The final HEA was adorable.
6. Jurnee has a gay best friend who is literally hilarious. He was my favorite character. I love him.
7. I loved the NYC references and it made me miss the city badly.
8. All of Jurnee's friends and family were so supportive of her and encouraged her in the whole book to move to the city and start working towards a dream.
Overall, I was entertained and that is all I can ask for from books. Mister Manhattan was still a cute romance and I am glad that I read it. I did like the author's writing style.
