Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.
A reporter goes back to her hometown once murder breaks out in the small town.
Gillian Flynn is becoming one of my favorite authors. Especially when it comes to thrillers. I became so engrossed in this novel that I ended up finishing it in only a day! The disturbing plot and characters made this story. Not one person in the book is completely sane. At one point, I thought everyone had done the murders. This is one of the best-written thrillers I have ever read. I think this is my new favorite Gillian Flynn book. It easily surpassed Gone Girl for me.
The twists kept me awake. There is no way you can be fully prepared for this gruesome story. I am keeping this review kind of bland because I do not want to ruin anything for you. It's better going into this book not knowing much beforehand. I am glad that I didn't research the plot as much myself because I was in for a bunch of shocks while reading! Please do me a favor and please read the book before watching the tv show! You will not be disappointed in the slightest.
If you love thrillers this is one you must pick up. It's one of my new favorites. The only reason why this book didn't get a five star from me is that at times I felt like the story was a little too drawn out. It kind of had a slow plot. The ending made me want more. I needed more of a follow up on the characters and what happened to them.
Warnings to lots of self-harm and alcoholism. Not to mention dysfunctional families. It can be triggering so just be warned. Parts were terrifying but that was the whole fun of the story for me. Reading this late at night got me all tingly inside. If you don't like gruesome stories then do not pick this one up.
I am pretty good at thrillers and figuring out who the killer is but this book still had twists that even I didn't expect! Sharp objects is beautifully written. The descriptions are very well done to where I felt like I was in the small town experiencing everything before my eyes. This book is definitely an adult novel and not for young eyes.
Gillian Flynn is an American author and television critic for Entertainment Weekly. She has so far written three novels, Sharp Objects, for which she won the 2007 Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for the best thriller; Dark Places; and her best-selling third novel Gone Girl. Her book has received wide praise, including from authors such as Stephen King. The dark plot revolves around a serial killer in a Missouri town, and the reporter who has returned from Chicago to cover the event. Themes include dysfunctional families, violence and self-harm. In 2007 the novel was shortlisted for the Mystery Writers of America Edgar for Best First Novel by an American Writer, Crime Writers' Association Duncan Lawrie, CWA New Blood, and Ian Fleming Steel Daggers, winning in the last two categories. Flynn, who lives in Chicago, grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated at the University of Kansas, and qualified for a Master's degree from Northwestern University.

I read this one around the time it came out, and it definitely made Gillian Flynn a favorite author. My favorite book by her, though, is Dark Places! I'm glad you loved this one. I still need to watch the show.

I actually liked this better than Dark Places but I love all her books. I only watched one episode of the show so far and it's amazing!
DeleteI read this when it was first published and I still measure other thrillers by it. In all the years since that first reading I’ve come across very few books as disturbingly good
ReplyDeleteI know it was amazing!!!! It's hard to come by good thrillers.
